Leander Paes put himself in contention for a third US Open men's doubles title after the Indian and his Czech partner Radek Stepanek entered the final following their rivals' injury-forced exit from the semifinals here.
Fifth seeds Paes and Stepanek were tied 5-5 in the first set when their sixth-seeded rivals Marcel Granollers and Marc Lopez of Spain retired due to injury.
The match was halted when Lopez received a lengthy medical timeout due to a calf injury. Two games later, Lopez gestured that he would be unable to continue before limping off the court.

Los Angeles: A Los Angeles bank manager was strapped what appeared to be a bomb on Wednesday and sent into her bank to take out money for two thieves who escaped with the cash, authorities said, describing a scene reminiscent of a Hollywood action movie.
Officials believe the two suspects kidnapped the manager at her home in suburban Huntington Park on Tuesday night and forced her to participate in the robbery, Los Angeles County Sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore said.
"The two men took her to her bank on Wednesday morning, telling her that she had to wear this 'explosive device,'" Whitmore said. "They strapped on what appeared to be pipe bomb."
Following the robbery, a sheriff's arson and explosives team removed the device from the woman and rendered it safe using a remote-controlled wheeled robot and sandbags. Huntington Park police Lieutenant Neal Mongan later said investigators did not believe it posed a threat.

Barely four years after his retirement from international cricket, former player Sourav Ganguly on Wednesday expressed his desire to wear the India Blues once again. The former India captain, once an advocate of foreign coaches, indicated that he was not averse to coaching the Indian team in the near future.
"Obviously, I have interest in coaching but only time will tell what can happen in future. If the BCCI feels that I can be a good coach to the team, I will be ready. I feel I can create a difference in terms of the ability of the players, their form and their development. That will be one way of my repaying the game," Ganguly told Aaj Tak.
One of India's most successful Test captains was quick to point that his vision of a coach would only be to give back-up support to the captain.

Twenty-three Indian sailors are on board an oil tanker hijacked by pirates off the coast of Lagos, Nigeria's commercial hub, said the oil tanker company on Wednesday.
Pat Adamson, spokesperson for the Dubai-based Pioneer Ship Management Services LLC, told Xinhua on phone that all the crew on the fully loaded gasoline tanker are Indian nationals.
He said the company lost contact with the crew after they sent distress signals even as the pirates boarded the ship in the night, with their last message indicating they had locked themselves inside a panic room on the vessel.

Madrid: Doctors have ruled out surgery to treat Rafael Nadal's knee injury and he could be back on the practice court in a month, Spanish tennis federation doctor Angel Ruiz-Cotorro said.
The 26-year-old has been on the sidelines since his shock Wimbledon second-round exit at the hands of unheralded Czech Lukas Rosol in late June because of a torn tendon in is left knee.
That meant he missed the London Olympics, the Masters series events at Toronto and Cincinnati as well as the US Open, which is currently underway in New York and where he reached the final last year.

The report by Washington Post writer Simon Denyer said, "India's Prime Minister Manmohan Singh helped set his country on the path to modernity, prosperity and power, but critics say the shy, soft-spoken 79-year-old is in danger of going down in history as a failure."
Criticising Manmohan for presiding over a deeply corrupt government, the Post added, "But the image of the scrupulously honorable, humble and intellectual technocrat has slowly given way to a completely different one: a dithering, ineffectual bureaucrat presiding over a deeply corrupt government."

Two years ago, it was believed that the Indian youth's political idealism is restricted to watching Rang De Basanti and their patriotism to chest-thumping during cricket matches between India and Pakistan.
Today, young Indians are shaping the political agenda of the nation. Their level of political awareness is such that mainstream political parties which ignore this section run the risk of being decimated at the hustings.
Much of the credit for transforming the youth from perennial backbenchers to the vanguard of politics should go to Arvind Kejriwal, the man who helped spark the mass upsurges at Jantar Mantar and Ramlila Maidan the past year.
