NEW DELHI: Senior BJP leader LK Advani has opposed Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi's suggestion that there should be a bid to create the Lokpal as an autonomous institution like the Election Commission. He felt that such a move would lead to more procedural delays

"It would not just delay the process, but in the present context, people will think you (government) are deliberately going for Rahul's idea in order to renege from your commitment to Parliament and Anna Hazare," Advani is learnt to have 'informally' aired his views to a Congress minister.

Advani also told the minister that "rather than trying for a constitutional amendment for the Lokpal, the government needs to make investigative agencies like CBI or CVC more independent while dealing with corruption."

Parliament took a unanimous view on the Lokpal and the government has assured to go by it is a good way for the matter to have ended, Advani felt.

The overwhelming view among MPs in Opposition benches after Parliament adopted the resolution on Saturday and communicated the sense of the House to the standing committee looking into it is that the Lokpal Bill is likely to come up for passage when the Winter Session begins.
