NEW DELHI: Confrontation between BJP and Congress over the CAG report on Commonwealth Games is set to intensify, with the Opposition BJP planning to bring a privilege motion against sports minister Ajay Maken for saying that it was the NDA government that appointed Suresh Kalmadi as the chief of the Organising Committee (OC).
Armed with evidence to prove that it was the Congress-led UPA-I government which appointed Kalmadi, the Opposition party plans to bring the motion in the House on Monday. According to BJP sources, fingers point at the Manmohan Singh's PMO, rather than the NDA, on the appointment of Kalmadi who was also the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) chief. The BJP top brass will meet at senior party leader L K Advani's residence on Sunday to work out the strategy to attack the government on the basis of CAG report on the CWG.
Leaders of the Delhi BJP unit met Advani on Saturday and asked for the matter to be raised in Parliament. But Advani is believed to have told them that just by raising the issues that have come up in the CAG report may not be accepted now as the House can always say that the report has to first go to the Public Accounts Committee (PAC). Therefore, the issue could be brought in through Maken's statement that the NDA government appointed Kalmadi as the OC chief. The party is of the opinion that Maken's statement is a clear case of breach of privilege.
Monday had earlier been slotted by the business advisory committee of the Lok Sabha for discussing the July 13 Mumbai terror attack. That may have to be pushed back to a later date, now that the CWG issue has come up and BJP would like to keep up the pressure on the government over it.
Upping the ante, Delhi BJP chief Vijendra Gupta on Saturday demanded that the CBI file a case against chief minister Sheila Dikshit on the basis of the CAG report. He also said that the party would launch a mass movement demanding her ouster.
