JAIPUR: A tricky question is doing the rounds in boxing circles: Does money comes first or country? For boxer Vijender Singh, the answer is always the latter. The Bhiwani pugilist has skipped the much-hyped World Series Boxing to prepare for the Asian Olympic qualifying tournament.
Considered the poster boy of Indian boxing, Vijender hasn't yet qualified for the London Olympics, hence all eyes are on the Asian qualifiers at Astana, from March 30. Speaking to TOI from the national camp in Patiala, he said his only target was to earn an Olympic berth.
"The same thing happened in 2008. I failed to win most of the tournaments, and somehow qualified for the Olympics in my last attempt. It's the same situation this time too. I have missed all the opportunities, now I am left with only one option and I am sure history will repeat itself," he said.
Asked about the reason behind his absence from the WSB, Vijender said: "For me, making it to the Olympics is more important. Practice is priority. But I sincerely support this tournament."
